Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions families ask most often about bedside and mobile notarization in Birmingham.
Can you come to a hospital room or hospice?
Yes. Bedside signings are my specialty. I go to hospitals, hospice facilities, rehab centers, nursing homes, offices, and public locations in Birmingham, AL. I'm independent and not affiliated with any facility.
How quickly can you get there?
Often the same day, usually within 2–4 hours in the Birmingham medical district. Call 334-645-4134 for anything urgent.
What ID does the signer need?
A current, government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID card, passport or military ID. A hospital wristband is not identification. If the ID is at home, ask a family member to bring it before the appointment. If the ID is expired or missing, call me before booking.
What if the patient can't physically sign their name?
Some documents can be signed by another person at the signer's direction and in their presence. Alabama's power of attorney and advance directive laws both allow this. Please tell me ahead of time so we can plan. The signer still has to be able to understand and direct the signing.
What if the signer is on medication or seems confused?
I have to be satisfied that the signer knows what they're signing and is signing willingly. I'm not making a medical judgment, but if the signer can't communicate or doesn't seem to understand at the visit, I can't notarize. It helps to ask the nurse when the patient is usually most alert and schedule for then.
Do I need witnesses?
It depends on the document. An Alabama advance directive needs two witnesses who are at least 19, and a will needs two witnesses. A power of attorney only needs a notary. Relatives and some others can't serve as witnesses on an advance directive, and hospital staff may not be allowed to by facility policy. I can help arrange independent witnesses. [FEE: $30 per witness]
Should I sign the document before you arrive?
No. Please don't sign ahead of time. The signer has to sign in front of me, or acknowledge the signature to me in person, and I need to see the complete document with no blanks.
How much does it cost?
Alabama allows notaries to charge up to $10 per notarial act plus travel and convenience fees. See full service pricing. I'll give you the full cost before I come. Payment: [METHODS].
Can you tell me which form to use or help fill it out?
No. I'm a notary public, not an attorney, so I can't prepare legal documents, pick forms or explain their legal effect. An elder law or estate planning attorney can help. The Alabama State Bar Lawyer Referral Service is 1-800-392-5660.
Can you certify a copy of a birth or death certificate?
No. Notaries can't certify copies of vital records like birth, death or marriage certificates. Order certified copies from the agency that issued the original.
Do you print documents?
Yes. If the document was emailed to you, send it to me and I can bring printed copies. Startings at $20 for up to 50 pages.
